Privacy policy
The short version. Frodi has no accounts, no analytics, no ads and no tracking, and sells nothing about you. Your progress is saved in a database on your phone and stays there unless you export a backup yourself.
Who runs Frodi
Frodi is made by Alex Kuehl, an individual developer. You can reach him at support@frodi.org.
What the app keeps, and where
Everything you do in Frodi is saved in a database inside the app, on your phone: your answers, your review schedule, the words you have learned, your settings, your study time and your reports of content problems. It is not sent to us or to anyone else. Frodi has no account to sign in to and no server that receives your progress.
The courses themselves (words, lessons, stories, pictures) are part of the app. The app does not need an internet connection to teach you.
What Frodi does not do
- No accounts and no sign-in.
- No analytics, no usage statistics sent anywhere, no crash reporting service.
- No advertising and no advertising identifiers.
- No tracking across apps or websites, and no data shared with data brokers.
- Nothing about you is sold or rented to anyone.
Backups
In Settings › Your data you can export a backup: one file with your settings and progress. You choose where it goes (for example Files, iCloud Drive, Google Drive or an email to yourself) using your phone's share sheet. From then on that file is yours and is handled by the place you saved it. Frodi never uploads a backup on its own. You can import a backup the same way.
Reminders
Daily reminders are off until you turn them on in Settings › Reminders. They are local notifications: your phone schedules them itself. Frodi asks your phone for permission to show notifications when you turn them on. No push service and no server is involved.
Voices and speaking exercises
When Frodi reads words aloud, it uses the voices built into your phone.
Speaking exercises are off until you turn them on in Settings › Voice. When they are on, Frodi uses your microphone and your phone's own speech recognition service (Apple's on iPhone, Google's on most Android phones) to check what you said. Depending on your phone and language, that service may process the audio on the phone or on Apple's or Google's servers, under their privacy terms: Apple's privacy policy and Google's privacy policy. Frodi only receives the recognized text, uses it to check your answer, and keeps no recording.
Downloads and this website
Today every course is included in the app. When Frodi offers language downloads and content updates, they will be served by Cloudflare, which hosts our files. This website, frodi.org, is hosted by Cloudflare too. Like any web host, Cloudflare sees the IP address and the time of each request to deliver the files and keep the service secure. Frodi adds no identifier of yours to these requests, and this website uses no cookies, no analytics and no third-party scripts.
If you write to support@frodi.org, the developer reads your message and uses your email address and what you wrote only to answer you. The address is forwarded by Cloudflare Email Routing to the developer's Gmail inbox, so Cloudflare and Google handle those messages on the way and in storage, under their privacy terms: Cloudflare's privacy policy and Google's privacy policy. Messages are kept in that inbox and are not shared with anyone else. Ask, and your messages will be deleted.
Content problems you report in the app stay on your phone. If you choose to send them to us (Settings › Reported issues › Share all reports), they arrive as an ordinary message and are treated like email.
Mature content
Frodi has an optional Mature section with adult vocabulary (swearing, slang and body words). It is off by default, it is meant for adults only, and the app asks you to confirm before turning it on in Settings.
Children
Frodi is not directed at children under 13. The app collects no personal information from anyone, children included. If you believe a child has sent us personal information by email, write to us and it will be deleted.
Deleting your data
Because your progress lives only on your phone, you are in control of it. Settings › Reset › Reset everything erases all of your progress in the app. Deleting the app deletes its database. Nothing is kept on a server, so there is nothing else to delete. Backup files you exported stay wherever you saved them until you delete them.
Changes to this policy
Accounts and syncing your progress between devices are planned for a later version. Before they are released, this policy will be updated to say exactly what they store and where, and the date above will change. Any other change will also be posted here with a new date.
